The Steelhead has often been referred to as both a Salmon and a Trout - it can be quite confusing. They are essentially the same species as a Rainbow Trout, the difference is that Rainbow Trout never leave fresh water while the Steelhead migrate into the ocean, change colour and can get much larger than resident rainbow trout. Another interested fact is that unlike species of Salmon, Steelhead can return to the ocean after spawning.
